Ilse’s Cabinet

Dimensions: 24” x 18”

Medium: Acrylic Guache, colored pencil, paper

For my AP Art Drawing Portfolio, I investigated the topic of the journey of a mid-20th century European Immigrant coming to America. I looked at different points of an immigrant’s life as well as the symbolism behind making the treacherous journey. My painting, Ilse’s Cabinet, is a depiction of the side of my Great Grandmother’s kitchen cabinet. Through my whole life, this display of papers has always been there, evolving with new phone numbers of my family members and her neighbors.

This specific piece was selected in the 2023 Congressional Art Competition. As part of being selected, this work was displayed for an entire year in the Washington D.C. Capitol Building.
